August 2010 two teachers one in Lithuania  Šiaulių Stasio Šalkauskio Gymnazija and one in Iceland Framhaldsskólinn í Austur-Skaftafellssýslu (FAS)  were surfing the internet. They met on the Nordplus Junior page seeking for a new partner. After a few emails they decided to work together and started working on a application.

The application was accepted in June 2011 and soon after that the project leaders started to plan the visits.

The project is related to the climate change and deals with energy, its production and impact on the environment and economics. It has long been known that traditional energy sources such as coal and oil have negative impact on the atmosphere. Moreover, presently we are already running out of traditional energy sources and in the near future it will be necessary to find new ways of producing energy. Therefore, the project participants will investigate and collect project material about various renewable energy sources, i.e., solar energy, wind energy, hydropower energy, geothermal energy, biomass energy, biofuel, hydrogen energy, tidal power energy, wave power energy, osmosis energy etc., and ascertain what kinds of renewable energy sources are already employed in Iceland and Lithuania as well as determine how far the countries are presently advanced in the sphere.

The Icelandic and Lithuanian pupils will study the use of traditional energy sources and compare them with alternative ones, highlighting importance of producing environmentally friendly energy and decreasing the amount of energy consumed in connection with electricity and electrical equipment. The project participants will investigate negative impact of burning fossil fuels on the environment and can already be observed in their countries as well as develop an awareness of importance to recycle garbage and reuse everything what can be reused. Moreover, the Icelandic and Lithuanian pupils will make certain calculations and ascertain what positive impact can be made on economics of the countries when employing renewable energy sources. To deepen the project participants’ knowledge of the subject, the target group will have various study visits to institutions that are working in the field of renewable and environmentally friendly energy and take part in the workshops arranged at both schools.

Last but not least, the project participants will perform multiple tasks in order to get familiarised with geography, history, society and culture of the participating countries.

When those words are written the students have started to communicate. The Icelandic students will visit Lithuania in November 2011 and the visit from Lithuania is expected in March 2012.
